The “Zelda” Herd

We have a healthy, closed herd of Nubian, Alpine, and Alpine-Nubian crossed dairy goats.

When we bought the property, we decided that for fun, all of our livestock would have names from the Legend of Zelda video game universe! We always love getting name suggestions for future animals.

As of fall 2022, we have 7 does (females), 2 bucks (intact males), and 1 wether (neutered male). The does live in a well-ventilated barn with access to an acre of pasture, and the bucks and wether live in an additional acre of pasture with covered shelter. We feed our goats high quality alfalfa hay, with supplemental grain for the milking does which is fed during milking time. The goats also have free-choice access to mineral supplements.

As weather permits, our goats join us on forage walks on an additional 15 acres of land, and enjoy the natural browse.

We do not give our animals prophylactic antibiotics, growth hormones, or any artificial supplements. Our herd is very healthy. In the rare instances when one of our goats is sick, we administer probiotic paste and may use antibiotics or other drugs for treatment. We observe posted milk withdrawal times and will not sell milk or make dairy products from an animal on treatment. We treat our animals gently and humanely and they are sleek, happy, and very friendly.
